My Approach

I believe that we all make meaning (or create narratives) about how we  experience others and how ordinary and extraordinary life events impact us. I trust that the process of therapy not only helps us become aware of these narratives, but allows us to explore which stories serve  us and which block  our way forward.  Knowing this creates choice. Carl Jung wrote: "Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life."

I also value the importance of acknowledging and working within social and cultural contexts. I believe we need to use multiple lenses when looking at ourselves and when working with others. This belief led me to embrace cultural humility. What resonates with me most about this concept is that it requires one to be open to how another person experiences their identity—not how one thinks or believes another identifies. As such, I have a commitment to owning any assumptions or mistakes I make in regards to another’s identity.
